I think the member list needs weeding out. I am always looking for interesting astronomy websites so I was having a nosy through the member list to see what I can find. It struck me that there are a hell of a lot of members on the site with zero posts and active WWW links which, when the mouse cursor is placed over the link (I never click on links, I usually just place the cursor over them to see what the URL is), appear to go to websites selling non-astronomy-related stuff - potentially harmful websites.

I agree, Talyn. It's something that were aware of and are working on. We seem to get a lot of spammers, which is why we recently started manually activating new accounts. This way, someone can't just create a dozen new spam accounts without us knowing.

We'll be going through the member list in the next few weeks and purging all spammy looking members.

Thanks again! smile

The Admin & Mods are aware of this and we've discussed it at length. We are working on getting these cleaned up, but most of us have been pretty busy with work and the holidays.

Have you seen the sticky resource thread under Telescopes & Binoculars we put together?

Link

A lot of it is equipment manufacturers and retailers, but under the Specialty Sites there is some cool stuff. Everything is setup as links so just clink on them to go to the webpage.

Cloudy Nights probably gets over 100 spammers attempting to sign up every day. We catch most of them before they get their account activated but a few slip thru.

It's a never ending battle these days.
