Tom (nightskystargazer) keeps asking me to take a picture of my night sky. But since I don't have the EQ mount or the photography expertise necessary to take long exposures, I thought I'd instead show him pictures I took with no flash of my SQM from the other night. grin

You are one evil fellow, Erik. Nearly 22 in every direction...sigh, must be nice.

As for your sky, imaging is cake. Take your lowest fl lens on your tripod mounted 20D, set it to manual, f8, 30 sec, ISO 1600, focus ring 90% to infinity, shot mode to timer. Place it low and behind your dob for some dramatic foreground. ;)

Actually, seeing as Volcanoes Natl Park is practically a stone's throw from us, our skies are sort of like this, minus the crater and volcano fog. There's also a lot of moonlight in this photo. (BTW, in case it's not obvious, I didn't take this picture grin)

Here's a photo from a place about 15 miles from where I live. This is pretty much what my sky looks like on a clear moonless night with dark adapted eyes. I wish I could take credit for the photo, but I didn't take it. I got it on the Macadamia Meadows B&B website:

Well, I'm jealous, too. My consolation is I get a month or more of dark skies like that every year, when I'm out doing my astronomy volunteer gigs in the national parks. And showing the night sky to hundreds of people every other night, I really get a lot of viewing in.

I honestly never get tired of M13, Albireo, and NGC457 - even looking at them 100 times in a night (aligning the scope between visitors).

With all the developments going up on the island, I'd say it's only a matter of time before the skies get much brighter. So I better enjoy it while I can.

With 18", you can overcome some LP with brute aperture, can't you, Freddy? I know what you mean though- I used to have mag 4 skies on a good night when I lived in California.

The really good nights here are when there is volcano fog below me, which blocks out the few lights that there are. I'm at 4500 feet elevation, so when that happens, it's just incredibly dark. I was surprised to find that my backyard is quite a bit darker than the Mauna Kea Visitor Center at 9200 feet. But Mauna Kea is only 30 miles from Hilo, a town of over 40,000. I'm 80 miles from Hilo, hence the darker skies.
